All that you should know before choosing your Cloud

Cloud Computing shown by few wires connected to a real cloud image

Cloud Computing isn’t an unknown term for businesses today. Almost every company has a near-future plan to migrate to cloud, or has already done so. Of course, the advantages of migrating to cloud, barring a few exceptions, remains really high. But the catch here remains to understand which would be the best option. There is no ‘one type fits all’ cloud solution available. Different kinds of Cloud Computing Models are adapted by companies based on various factors. Public cloud domains are the most preferred cloud solution for start-ups and smaller companies, whereas enterprises and MNCs prefer either a Private cloud or a Hybrid, depending on their requirements.

Here is a quick glance at what’s what:

Private Cloud:

Cloud Solutions custom-built for specific organizations are known as Private Cloud Networks. Keeping all data within a controlled environment, private clouds are the best bet for maintaining and sharing highly sensitive data with the data center resources located either on-premise, or at third-party off-shore premises.

Advantages:

  • Exclusivity and highly customizable
  • Optimized performance due to dedicated resources
  • Increased Security

Disadvantages:

  • Lower scalability
  • Possibility of limited access on mobile
  • High pricing.

Types: Software only platforms, hosted or managed private cloud, combined software/hardware solutions.

Public Cloud:

Public Cloud solutions are delivered to users over the internet. This model works on a low-cost, subscription-based pricing, and its functionality may range from simple email and app storage, to infrastructure environments for testing or enterprise-grade OS platforms. In this solution, the allocation of computing resources to different buyers lies with the cloud vendor.

Advantages:

  • High scalability
  • Extremely affordable
  • Expert Technical Management
  • No investment in Infrastructure

Disadvantages:

  • Least control over Security
  • Minimum Control over Technical aspects.

Examples: Microsoft Azure, Salesforce, Gmail, Office 365, Zoom, etc.

Hybrid Cloud:

A hybrid cloud network is an amalgamation of Private and Public cloud, in which companies partly use their own cloud network and space for sensitive data management, but may use public cloud for non-sensitive data transfer or to reduce traffic on congested networks.

Advantages:

  • Higher Flexibility
  • Cost-effective
  • Better control and ease of implementation
  • Increased security and reliability

Disadvantages:

  • Increased complexity
  • Compatibility issues may arise

Types:

  • Homogenous
  • Heterogenous

Examples: Amazon Web Services (AWS), SEGA, IBM Hybrid Cloud.
