In today’s world, a simple online search about a candidate can reveal not only his or her interests and connections, but rather their daily life habits and personality. In our previous blog, we spoke of the things you can do to create a good online presence, not only for recruiters who’d like to know more about you, but in general. As a continuation to that, today we talk about the 5 things that you must avoid on Social Media, if you’d like to make a good online presence to help you get a dream job.
Don’t give away too much information
There might be those who love to talk about themselves, but it may not be a good idea to be an open book online. You may want to share all your thoughts and write as much as you can, but being concise is equally important. Otherwise, you may risk being seen as egotistical. There is a thin line between being proud of accomplishments and bragging. Similarly, your posts and opinions may reveal your shortcomings. It’s better to keep a few of your thoughts to be discovered later on, only for those who you connect with.
Don’t be too expressive about your opinions
Social Media has become a great platform for everyone to voice their opinions. However, there is a chance that one may get carried away and become too expressive about their opinions. This is especially true about the latest happenings, or the most recent viral content. So while you stay pro-active on Social Media, its important that you remain respectable and not use foul language. As a recruiter, when they see someone being too expressive and not being able to control their words, it might make them feel that the person is someone who may spoil the work environment.
Don’t be trolling others
Another thing that you may want to avoid on Social Media is to make fun of, or ‘troll’ other people on Social Media. Of course, playful banter and light-hearted taunts among your friend groups is fine, but its risky to do the same with strangers. Just like being too expressive, some people may find your playful remarks as offensive. And for a recruiter, this may show your insincerity or lack of politeness.
Don’t be experimenting with funky user IDs or nicknames
Just like your email ID, having a simple, or maybe just a little creative user ID can be a good move, professionally. It might be tempting to try out cool, funky nicknames. But it’s better to avoid them, at least when you’re job-hunting. Though it might not be much of a deal-breaker, it might just be one of those things that may make a bad first online impression.
Don’t share your account
Though most of us are pretty much aware of not sharing our Social Media passwords and account, we may tend to give access to our account to our friends or family members. It’s more of a preventive measure that one can take to ensure that their social accounts don’t get hacked.
Having a good online presence is a great way to make an impression. As talked about in our previous blog, certain small do’s and don’ts can help you in your job-search, in a small but powerful way. Those who can make use of Social Media for their job search and to make their candidature strong, do stand a far greater chance of finding a better job.
